We have a little spot by our driveway bordered by rocks that used to have flowers. Hope filled it with a dozen or so round river rocks from our yard and laid on top of them. When I asked what she was doing she said "laying on my eggs".

Hope...
No one could ever miss my Hope though!
Still more verbal than her sister, I think they take turns getting into mischief. In some ways it's easy for me to see their separate personalities, yet when I think about trying to explain it to someone who doesn't know them it's not so easy. They are twins, and yet unique individuals. I hope they will always see me treating them that way.
At 3 1/4 these girls have ALL the personality and yet they are still my little snuggle bugs. One thing about staying here with my parents is that whoever gets up first gets to come climb in bed with me on the pull-out couch. Hope is much better at just laying still next to me for awhile and really snuggling. I love it!
Hope... hope was my word for the year. And it's been hard, maybe harder this year than some others. I'm not in my twin-haze anymore and life is so much more complicated now. I haven't even found a frame for that word yet, but it's been ever present in the back of my mind, I've needed to call on it so much more than any other word. It's almost a reminder to not give up.
The phrase that comes to mind tonight; Hope is an anchor. An anchor for my soul in all the crazy stuff that comes my way. I just pray that it's lodged firmly in solid rock to hold me steady.

Flee! Or in adult speak: Three!
These girls (not babies), are crazy, wild, and amazing. Today they are three. In some ways it's been such a loooong three years and in other ways I think, oh, I just did that last year, but no, it was actually 4 years ago. I'm just now coming out of my time warp!
Three is an amazing emerging vocabulary. A definite idea about how things run, in life, and in our home. A love for siblings and a pretty good sense of humor. (they get that from their dad)
Three is fake cheesy smiles for the camera and asking for chocolate after Mama is the paparazzi. It's knowing that today is your birthday and being so excited about that before there is even cake or presents or balloons or Nana and Papa and Auntie Annika for dinner too.
Three is learning to listen and obey and remembering things like not running in the parking lot, finally. Three has logic and can be reasoned with, and is very good at pointing out how things should go.
Three is 37 1/8 (Hope) and 37 1/4 (Joy) inches tall and 32 3/4 pounds each in size 8 1/2 or 9 shoes. Still as close as always!
These girls have a pretty amazing twin bond, always wanting to know where the other one is and never too far apart. They do have quite different personalities in some ways though. Hope is more verbal, friendly to strangers, and loves to sing! Joy is a little quieter, but more active, and loves to dance! Watch out world, they will make an amazing combo!

Girl Quotes #1
I haven't collected many boy quotes lately because they've gotten so grown up in their use of language, but it's time to write down some of the funny things the girls are saying! So, first edition of girl quotes!
When a girl asks for something and we say no, or something else, she will often then say "or not". Example: "I go to church." "No, not right now, sister." "Or not."
Both girls, but more particularly Joy will say if they don't like or want something, "I can't like it."
Hope is a little bossy, but she's always paying attention to the details as well. She will remind Daddy on the way out the door in the morning if he's forgotten, "Glasses!"
When we have Chicken Pasta Noodle Salad for dinner the girls get it mixed up with what a rooster says and call it "Cock a Noodle Salad".
Every time we drive into town we pass the train yard and the girls call out "woo woo" and then as we're going up the hill they say "Bye bye trains, see ya later!"
When we have huckleberry ice cream Hope calls it Chuckleberry.
Anytime there is a snake in a book and we are identifying animals they call it a "sssss" rather than a snake.

Two and a Half
I cannot believe how much my girls have changed in the last 6 months so instead of waiting until they are 3 you get a half yearly update!
Since March they have progressed to speaking many more words and more clearly, particularly since about the first of August. They will now speak in complete sentences when they can although at this point Hope is more easily understood and has more of the sentences down. But they both can accurately communicate what they want and their concept of various ideas amazes me every day.
They remember people and things and places and will tell you about what they did this afternoon if you ask a good enough prompt. They love to go to church and play with "Mr. Evan". They will finally tell you their names when asked - if they are in the mood for it - and their brother's names too.
This week we finally upgraded to booster seats at the table with everyone else and it's so fun to have them all at the table now rather than in their high chairs kind of off to the side and behind me. This means they get plates now instead of only occasionally and hopefully it also means less food on the floor!
At least they are generally very polite girls, so cute to hear them say thank you when I give them their food or water cups.
Sisters will be sisters and they do fight over things, but for the most part they each have a few things that are "theirs" and they share the other toys fairly well. They are still banned from the brother's room for the most part, but occasionally get in and are starting to want to play with the little Legos without putting them in their mouths. I wish we had more Duplos for them to play with, but at this point I don't think I'm going to invest in those. (The ones we have came home with us on a plane from friends in Arizona!)
Hope in particular will point out "mine" color anytime she sees pink in a book or someone's shirt. But it doesn't bother them too much to both wear pink or purple. However if there is one pink shirt and one purple shirt and you get them backwards, woe and bad tidings to you! Funny how their little brains work!
The trains are a very big point of interest. We often will "catch" a train while going into town and as we pass the train yard they have to say "bye bye trains" as we go up the hill and can't see them anymore. Sometimes they are "too loud" when we have the windows open in the evening and they whistle at our crossing just down the street.
We watch more cartoons in the morning now and the girls love Daniel Tiger. It's an animated spin-off from Mr. Rogers Neighborhood and it's actually quite adorable. There are cute little lessons in each story complete with a song and I will hear the girls singing the songs days later. Things like "you take a turn, then I get one too". I hope it helps!
They also like Strawberry Shortcake, Clifford, and just discovered Curious George. They love Blues Clues too, but unfortunately we don't really have access to it other than at Grandma's house. They almost know how to work the whole Wii by themselves... a scary thought!
Speaking of singing songs, they very much love music and Hope will stop everything and dance if she hears any music anywhere. They will sing along with me at bedtime as I'm singing to them and ask for particular songs. The Elephant Song (not a bedtime song) is adorable if you ever get to witness it. As is I'm a Little Tea Pot.
We went to a birthday party tonight and the girls thought we were going to a tea party. They would not be convinced otherwise. That's where the photos came from in this post. I hope it lived up to their expectations. They did at least get ice cream!
These girls are still kind of little, they've grown 2 1/2 inches since March, but only put on 3 pounds! Around 35 inches and 30 pounds each. Guess I shouldn't complain too much since they still both want to be held at the same time. Moving into 3T clothing in all except pants, which still fall off half the time.
Shoes are a very big deal and have to be kept in the cedar chest or there would be a shoe hunt every day we needed to go out somewhere. (They have dress up shoes for wearing in the house.) Unfortunately they also like to take their shoes off the instant they get in their car seats so I spend way too much time putting shoes and socks back on every time we stop to go somewhere.
And that I believe is your head to toe update!

It's Finally Spring!
And we have been doing a TON of things outside the past couple of weeks! Let the annual mountain of photos begin...
Joy was NOT happy about the fact that she didn't get to sit with me and couldn't really see me...
After one ride the girls were done. Even in my lap Hope was whimpering a bit.
But Noah proceeded to ride the train 4 times in a row and probably would have kept going if they hadn't been done for the morning!
Next stop (same day) a hike up the side of a hill with all the 1st graders in Cory's school. Here he's got deer hooves in his hands. (and it was just me, Nana took the little ones back for lunch and nap time - they would NOT have made it on this hike)
And a part of a deer hide. It was an outdoor education type field trip and the perfect day for it. I'm glad we went on Tuesday rather than later in the week when it was in the 80's!
Lots of volunteers just letting the kids have some exposure to things some of them may not otherwise see.
Last stop on the field trip was collecting bugs... I'm rather glad that none of the kids found much, but an earlier class found a scorpion! I didn't even know we had those around here!
Thursday, the hottest day, we met some friends at the park for lunch... and these two were smart and found a shady spot to eat!
Friday we went out a little earlier and met some other friends. This park is more shady and smaller to keep track of the kids, but it has more climbing options...
Goofy girls, finally figured out how to pick up their feet so their shoes didn't catch on the slide and they could go down FAST. They didn't want to leave.
I have a feeling we'll be getting to know all the local parks again now!
First stop, river train with the MOPS group and Nana.

Two Times Two!
My babies are two! Not sure I can call them babies anymore... they have SO much personality, but I also treat them more like babies than I did with either of the boys... maybe because there are two of them and I have less time.
They are into EVERYTHING these days. Here, we got a box in the mail and they co-opted it as a bed. They wanted their "banket" and for me to cover them up.
They really don't care that much about watching TV at all, but on the weekend when brothers are both home and watching cartoons with Kix in the morning they must participate. Of course, then we have Kix to clean up off the floor. Sometimes they eat them off the floor, other times they put them in the trash.
They adore brothers and will say goodbye to Cory in the mornings when he leaves for school and then later ask for him. When I say he's gone to school they say "bus" because we can watch the bus pick him up out our front window. He's usually home while they are napping in the afternoon and they love to see him when they get up!
Here's Noah sharing his new Lego magazine with them before bedtime.
Sometimes they will let me get in a few minutes of exercise, other times... they want to participate! This day they had watched for awhile and then wanted to get in on it. I guess they watch well!
Evidences of getting into everything...
On Friday we picked up balloons at the dollar store. They LOVED them to death this weekend (as did Noah with his). They've also started to figure out stickers and we get them at the bank and a lot of grocery/shopping stores.
Of course one of the best pictures didn't turn out because my camera was set to the outside pictures... I forgot I'd gone outside to take pictures of the crocuses coming up. We have spring here now!
The laundry basket is so much fun to play in, but they are big helpers with the laundry too. Putting their dirty clothes in the basket in the bathroom (while saying "laundry!") and helping Noah do his job of pulling all the baskets out to the laundry room and back again. They know exactly where things go and especially Hope is very particular. It's fun to watch. But woe to you if you give her sister something she thinks is hers! There will be much wailing over things like mixed up trays or bibs for meal time! She'll also attempt to help her sister get dressed.
I had very little success with bunny pictures this time, but I didn't try too long. This is Joy and she was willing to sit and hold Mr. Bunny.
Hope didn't want to cooperate until I bribed her with promises of "choc-et".
This is what started to happen anytime I put them both up together. Hope will slouch down until she slides right off the front! She's a goofball, but won't pose for the camera at all.
They both love to play pretend with cups and spoons and food. Joy decided Mr. Bunny needed a drink!
Hope was trying to eat her balloon... although she was getting frustrated because she would pull it down and then try to grab the whole thing and it would float away from her.
The girls have a lot of individual words, but not too many phrases. One they have picked up from me is to hold up a finger for me to stay wherever I am while they run to get something. They say "I back". I say it a lot when I take one out to the car and don't want the other one to cry. I hold up a finger and tell them I'll be right back to get her. So now they use it on me. You can see it a bit on the video at the bottom of this post.
The other things they say consistently are "Uh huh, yeah" and "Uh huh, sure" when they agree with you on something. Oh and "next" means they want you to sit wherever they are patting the chair, usually so they can sit with you. So cute!
My camera simply is not fast enough to focus on them half the time! They are BUSY girls!
They've picked up spinning around in circles until they fall down or bump into each other. And the other day we finally got to go outside to play other than just walk to the post office and they just took off like they were going to the PO on their own! When I finally convinced them to stay in front of our house they had a blast riding the little 4 wheeler, picking up rocks, and helping me shovel the gravel into a spot that gets muddy.
Stats as of last Monday: 27 pounds each and 32 3/4 inches - give or take a bit on those measurements due to wiggly girls, but they consistently measure almost exactly the same with Joy being just a smidge bigger and taller right now.
We're wearing all 24M tops, but still some 18M pants so they don't fall off! And a few 2T things that run small.
This was Saturday morning silliness with Daddy. They are running to get some pretend food and putting it in his hands. They will play this game indefinitely if you want!
